SIP Trunks are voice communications channels that are used to connect a customer's PBX to the telephone network via IP. Each trunk represents the capacity to make or receive a call. The service runs via IP (the Internet Protocol), but thanks to private peering agreements this does not necessarily mean calls are routed across the public Internet.
SIP Trunks are an ideal ISDN replacement solution. Customers can take advantage of the attractive cost of the initial setup as well as ongoing call cost savings thanks to competitive VoIP rates.
SIP Trunks are usually faster to provision than ISDN and scalable depending on customer needs. In the event of a disaster the customer's compatible PBX can be physically moved to another location with an appropriate Access Method and VoIP calls can often be back up and running immediately. SIP Trunks support the usual calling features such as CLIP & CLIR, Call Barring, Parking, Transferring and Conferencing although some of these features are dependent on the site PBX.
SIP Trunks can be used with a compatible PBX or linked to other non-compatible systems through the use of a VoIP Gateway to achieve cost savings and improved system resilience through the use of both PSTN and VoIP.
The SIP Trunk is the data channel used during a telephone call. A number of SIP Trunks can be supported over ADSL, SDSL and Leased Lines. The best access method can be determined from the number of simultaneous VoIP calls that are required. For up to ten simultaneous calls Swains Assured ADSL is a highly-reliable and cost-effective solution available in 99.95% of locations. For higher capacity we suggest SDSL and Leased Line options.
It is possible to port most UK Geographic numbers to the SIP Trunk carrier. The Calling Line Identifier (telephone number) that is presented on outgoing calls must be a UK Geographic number that has been ported to the carrier's IP telephony platform. For new numbers, ranges are available for all UK area codes.
Customers looking for a new phone system with reduced call rates and competitive ongoing costs should ensure their new PBX supports SIP Trunks. Customers with existing systems can also save as VoIP Gateways are able to connect existing systems to SIP Trunks. Whether a full or partial switch to VoIP is chosen significant saving can be realized.
